The Trap

by Beverley Kendall

Looking back, I should have seen it coming.

Paige didn’t like that I went so far away to university. But it was going to only be for two years. She’d join me after she did her two years at community college. I thought we could swing that no problem. We were solid.

But she hated the distance. She hated not seeing me every day. She complained that I didn’t come home enough. She hated that for months on end, texting and phone calls were our only form of communication. It wasn’t enough.

She’d ask about the girls on campus. She’d gotten it into her head that girls were always making a play for me. I laughed and told her, even if that were true, I’d never cheat on her. She didn’t seem completely reassured by that.

The bottom line is, Paige thought she was losing me. She wanted me home with her. But I could never imagine the level she’d sink to–the trap she’d set to make that happen.

And like an idiot I walked right into it.

And it’s a mistake I’m going to have to pay for the rest of my life.

The Moose Jaw

by Mike Delany

Strange things happen in the Alaska bush. The native Alaskans say that a white man, too long alone out there will go mad. Gus O’Neill suspects it may have happened to him. His two best friends, Hard Case Calis the old Alaska State Trooper, and Haywood Jennings the flying veterinarian think so too. Gus spends a summer on Moose Jaw Creek where he builds a cabin, finds a ravaged red-haired beauty he comes to love, and murders the man who had sexually molested her. When Haywood flies in to join Gus for a moose hunt he finds his friend alone and raving. There is no evidence that Gus’ redhead or the dead man he claims to have killed ever existed.

Gus is baffled by the disappearance of his woman and the body of his victim, but he agrees to join Haywood on a moose hunt. While getting in position to drive a large bull toward Haywood, Gus is attacked by a giant grizzly that has been stalking him. He manages to kill the bear but is badly mauled in the process. Haywood finds Gus and the dead bear, and flies his injured friend back to Fairbanks for treatment. The following day Haywood returns to Gus’ cabin with Hard Case to deal with the dead bear. During the flight they discuss Gus’ condition and his weird tale about the woman he had found and the man he’d killed. They agree Gus must have gone a little crazy while out there alone. Things become complicated when, back in the woods near Gus’ cabin, they find no bear carcass. Haywood insists he had seen and touched its dead body just yesterday. The two friends return to Fairbanks as mystified as Gus. When Hard Case unearths an unsolved case file that dates back more than forty years, it becomes clear that Gus may not have imagined the woman or the murder after all. Strange things happen in the Alaska bush.

Leftover People: A Journey Through Post-rock & Roll America

by Brent Jensen

Leftover People: A Journey Through Post-Rock and Roll America is the latest non-fiction work from rock critic Brent Jensen.

It recounts in graphic detail the events that take place during a promotional book tour of the southeastern United States in support of his rock and roll memoir No Sleep ‘Til Sudbury. As Jensen comes into personal contact with a colorful assortment of intensely dedicated 80s hard rock and metal fans that make up his readership over the course of the tour, he is forced to consider the deeper implications of his own fandom for the music of his youth through that of his readers.

Leftover People balances tales of the tour’s hazy escapades from city to city against a darker subtext illuminating the eternal struggle between the head and the heart, and of living in the moment versus living in the past.
